Getting to Rote: Your First Step
Your journey to Rote begins with a flight to Kupang, the capital of Timor.
From Jakarta or Bali, you’ll catch a direct flight to Kupang. The flight from Bali takes approximately 2 hours. Once in Kupang, you’ll have several options to reach Rote.
Option 1: Fast Flight to Rote
Fast, efficient, but not for everyone.
From Kupang, the fastest way to reach Rote is by air. Catch a quick flight from El Tari Airport for around IDR 800,000. The journey takes just 15 minutes, with a total boarding process of about 30 minutes. It’s the most convenient option if you’re eager to get here without the wait.

Option 2: Scenic Ferry Ride to Rote
Prefer a slower pace or carrying extra luggage? The ferry offers a more relaxed and scenic journey to Rote.
From Kupang Airport, it’s just a 20-minute drive to the ferry ports. You can choose between two options:
- Fast Ferry – Departs daily from Tenau Harbour (Kupang) at 09:00 AM, arriving in Rote around 11:00 AM. Executive/VIP fares range from IDR 172,000–245,000.

Note: During windier months (especially July–August), ferry schedules can be unpredictable. If you’re on a tight schedule, flying may be the better option.
Option 3: Private Plane for the Luxury Traveler

Luggage allowance: Commercial flights to Rote typically allow 10 kg of luggage. Surfboards incur additional fees: around IDR 200,000 (Lion/Batik/Super Air Jet), IDR 1,000,000 (Wings Air), or up to IDR 774,250 for extra boards on Susi Air. If you’re traveling with surfboards or oversized gear, the ferry is likely a more cost-effective option.
Ferry schedule: The fast ferry departs daily at 09:00 AM and returns from Rote at 12:00 PM, while the slow ferry departs daily around 3:30 PM and arrives in Rote in the evening. Plan your trip accordingly, especially during busy or windy seasons.
